Susan Rauer Awarded 2009 CNY CLMA Laboratorian of the Year The Clinical Laboratory Management Association (CLMA) of Central New York Chapter announced the Laboratorian of the Year at their annual AACC/CLMA meeting in October. The Laboratorian of the Year award is given to an individual who demonstrates at least two of the following attributes: leadership, quality performance and/or community involvement. This year, Susan Rauer, Manager of Research and Development at Laboratory Alliance of CNY, was honored with this prestigious award.
Sue has been a highly respected laboratorian in the Syracuse area for many years. Her leadership skills are exemplified by: her ability to teach clinical laboratory procedures to her staff, her willingness to listen and her knowledge of laboratory operations especially in Clinical Chemistry. Sue sets a high standard of practice and expects everyone to meet those standards. She is an intelligent, dedicated and compassionate leader. Sue is very organized and meticulous in her work focusing on the details to assure accuracy and perfection. Her critical thinking skills have enhanced her ability her to validate new products for manufactures of clinical chemistry instrumentation
Throughout the years, Sue progressed through the ranks from a bench tech to management and then onto research and development. She has served in the role of supervisor and manager of Clinical Chemistry at St Joseph's Hospital and Health Center and at Laboratory Alliance of CNY. Under Sue's leadership the Chemistry department at Laboratory Alliance expanded the complexity of its test menu significantly. Through the years Sue evaluated additional testing and platform changes to accommodate the marketplace. To keep up with these demands Sue was promoted to Manager of Research and Development which has allowed her to devote all of her time and energy to developing new testing and validating new products.
In summary, Susan Rauer has come to be respected as a superb manager of clinical chemistry, an excellent teacher, an exceptional clinical applications researcher and an inspiration to many clinical laboratory scientists.

Patty Miller Wins National Honor Patty has been a member of the CNY Chapter of CLMA since 2004. During that time, she has contributed to the organization in many ways:
Board Member
Education Committee Co-Chair
Vendor Relations Committee Member
Patty is always willing to give her time. If we need a volunteer, she is one of the first to respond. Patty started our chapter’s Laboratorian of the Year award. She uses all her resources with her company and contacts with others to get speakers and supplies for our meetings. She is responsible for Vendor Website Development on our chapter’s website. Her ideas were responsible for getting more vendors to participate, and has worked to organize the vendor piece of our annual meeting. Her idea for changing the way we pay for meals at our annual meeting saved our chapter approximately $4,000! Patty works hard to find locations for our meetings, books the rooms and plans the meals. She assists in developing meeting announcements and agendas.
Patty is always cheerful and upbeat. She encourages laboratorians to become involved in CLMA. She approached the local TV station about doing a story about our profession, and they agreed. It was aired September 2007.
Patty has also offered support and is assisting the Niagara Frontier CLMA chapter. She attended their October meeting and helped out there.
For all of these reasons, Patty was selected CLMA's Member of the Year!
