President's Message

As individuals who take a leadership role in the laboratory, we constantly deal with outside influences that sometimes attempt to wrench away our control.  While this feels like this has been progressively worsening with mounting legislation, there are some cultures that try to calm our fears by pointing out that we never had any control to begin with.  Last fall, I commented on the Farmer’s Almanac and how it uses the sun to predict the events of the coming year.  It seems only appropriate as I explore the influences on our daily lives that I share with you what the Chinese believe to be an overriding influence on what’s in store for 2005:

Welcome to the Chinese year of the Rooster!  The Chinese New Year is celebrated each year during the first two weeks of February. Traditionally, using their solar calendar, they start the year on February 4th beginning a new zodiac animal cycle. The New Moon day of February 9th 2005, however, is the official lunar New Year celebration day when you see the dragons out in the streets and the fireworks ignited.

The rooster is one of twelve zodiac animals chosen by Buddha to represent the New Year. The rooster is the first creature to awake in the morning and wakes up the others with crowing. Time to get up and get on with it, the rooster personality is up-front and focused. Their forthright nature will not make Roosters the best diplomats; however, you can count on their thorough approach and attention to detail to get the job done. We associate the qualities of sharpness and precision with the qi (energy) of the rooster. In a Rooster year, we will hear more cutting criticisms of those in the public life and feathers might well fly as prides are dented, nevertheless all will benefit from the rude awakening. Despite a fuss and a flap we can expect prudence to be the key in economic matters for the Rooster is a good money manager.

You don’t buy it, you say?  Well then, I can only suggest that we not leave our future in the hands of sunspots and roosters and take an active role in forming and influencing the doctrines which guide us in the performance of our jobs.  Getting involved in your local chapter of CLMA seems to be an obvious way to accomplish this.  We have several committees in search of new members, accompanied by their fresh ideas.  Not enough?  Enter a mentoring relationship with a current committee chair or officer!

Clinical Laboratory Technology Practice Act Signed by Governor

New York will join a handful of other states that require laboratory scientists to be licensed.  The four-year degreed clinical laboratory technologist will require a license, while the two-year degreed clinical laboratory technician will require certification.  Staff working in physician office laboratories will be exempt from these requirements.  The effective date is September 2006, but this may change as there is much to do to put this regulation in effect.  Once we determine the final wording and effective dates of the bill, we will share this information with all our members.
